Barack Obama endorsed the plan in a speech he made in Colorado, stating: "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objective that we’ve set. The government does not own your body or your time, and if you haven't committed a crime, the government has NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER to mandate that you labor on its behalf.







Stand up for the right to control your own life and your personal liberty. Sign the pact now and REFUSE to serve in any "Civil Service" plans Obama and Emanuel might have in store for us. Join this group if you are willing to take a stand against this gross overstepping of government power, the likes of which we haven't seen since the institution of the military draft.

Please note, this is not a partisan issue. No one here is vying for or against any particular political party or candidate; this is simply an argument against this one specific policy, created by Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, and endorsed by Barack Obama. We are specifically concerned about how this policy violates the basic human right of self-ownership, and how it will hamper this right's continued perseverance in America.

Also, this does NOT mean we are against community service or volunteerism. Many of us do plenty of volunteer and/or charity work in our own communities because we CHOOSE to, out of the goodness of our hearts. That is the whole point of volunteerism, performing a service due to one's personal choice to make a difference, not because of some government mandate.

ATTENTION SKEPTICS!

Many of you have expressed doubt that Obama's proposed plan will, in fact, be mandatory. In addition to everything I have listed in the "Recent News" section, here is some additional information that debunks this myth.

Recently, legislation known as the "Congressional Commission on Civic Service Act," H.R. 1444, has been introduced to the House of Representatives. Text from Section 4, Subsection B6 reads that the proposed commission would explore "Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable ***mandatory service requirement** for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented."

Additionally, Richard Danzig, a top adviser to the President-elect, wrote a book entitled, "National Service: What Would It Mean?"

On page 224, Danzig states that, "Specifically, we would impose a 5 percent surcharge on the tax paid each year by all income taxpayers, but we would forgive that charge to anyone who had previously performed 1 year of national service."

Essentially, this would mean that you would have to put in an extra 3 weeks of labor every year to pay off your "refusal to serve" tax... for the rest of your life! So whether you choose to "serve" or not, your labor is being stolen from you either way.

But Danzig doesn't stop there; not only will you be fined an extra 5% of your income, but "In this system, individuals claiming conscientious objection, hardship, school or occupational imperatives, or physical or mental deficiencies would receive no exemption."

There will be no exemptions from this program. Even if you are handicapped, impoverished, or object on moral/religious grounds. Either you serve, or you pay tribute every year until you die...

That 5% of your income could be put towards a college fund for your kids, a retirement fund, or even just help to pay the rent or buy groceries month to month...

What this plan effectively does is make it financially irresponsible for you to opt out of service. Over time, that 5% of your yearly income can really start to add up...

The message being sent here is this: This program is "voluntary", but only if you don't mind the government stealing 5% of your money every year for the rest of your life...

*NOTE: Many of you have questioned whether or not this service will be mandatory. The language that is used by the planners of this program CLEARLY implies that it will be mandatory - if not at first, then eventually somewhere down the line.

He says, "Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to REQUIRE 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year."

Notice that we mentioned this as "original". Obama's website was caught making "changes" after the original posting received much flak from bloggers. Pay close attention to the fact that they changed the wording from "require" to "setting a goal".

Also, as you can clearly see in the "issues" section of his website (found here: [link] ), under the heading "Barack Obama and Joe Biden's Plan", it states the following in a bullet point:

"Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Obama and Biden will establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year."

*REQUIRED* Community Service is nothing less than the government's assertion of ownership over its citizens!! Required Community Service is a common PUNISHMENT for CRIMINALS, and here you have Obama asserting that it will be required if you want to do something so bold as attend middle school, high school (both of which are mandated now as well, by the way), or college.

Please note: There is also a repeated mention of the term "service-learning" in another bullet point, in reference to the required labor for Middle and High Schoolers. This term, "Service-Learning," sounds eerily similar to the Communist Chinese ideal of "Education Through Labor."

The proposed notions are CLEARLY socialistic if not communistic in nature... PLEASE INVESTIGATE these claims before you write them off as insignificant.

If you click on the link to Emanuel's book above, it is quite apparent through his choice of language that this civilian service program will be required. In fact he calls it "Universal" almost a dozen times in just three pages of text.

Emanuel also equates the program to other "Universal" plans, such as "Universal Healthcare", which, last time I checked, would require that EVERYONE receive care through this program.

Wake up, America! If we don't take a stand on this today, and start exposing other citizens to the truth, the Obama Youth is coming, and it will be required, universal, and mandatory.

*UPDATE*: A recently posted PDF on Obama's website states that the plan will include "Engaging Retiring Americans In Service on a Large Scale," in addition to young adults, middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college students. No one will be exempt from the fines of non-servitude: [link]

The plan is described as an "Universal Voluntary Civilian Serivce". First of all, "universal" and "voluntary" are self-contradictory terms. It's impossible to have a system that's both universal and voluntary. According to dictionary.com, "universal" means "including or covering all or a whole collectively or distributively without limit or exception; especially: available equitably to all members of a society <universal health coverage>". "Voluntary" means "proceeding from the will or from one's own choice or consent". If it was a true voluntary system, there definitely will be people who choose not to participate therefore cannot make it universal. In order to make it universal, this system cannot be voluntary.

Also, pay attention to the language used such as "enlist" and "draft" in the section on the proposed Classroom Corps.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

H.R. 1388, the first National Service bill passed the House 248-174, and subsequently passed the Senate with only 19 votes against it. The mandatory service portions were removed, however, thanks to your support! Thanks to everyone who contacted their Senators and Representatives - you're making a difference!

Nevertheless, the portion of the bill has been reintroduced as H.R. 1444: The Congressional Commission on Civic Service Act. The revealing portion of the bill reads as follows:

111th CONGRESS - 1st Session

H. R. 1444

To establish the Congressional Commission on Civic Service to study methods of improving and promoting volunteerism and national service, and for other purposes.

SEC. 4. DUTIES.
(b) Specific Topics... the Commission shall address and analyze the following specific topics:

(5) The effect on the Nation, on those who serve, and on the families of those who serve, if all individuals in the United States were expected to perform national service or were required to perform a certain amount of national service.

(6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable *MANDATORY SERVICE REQUIREMENT* for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

(9) The effectiveness of establishing a training program on college campuses to recruit and educate college students for national service."

The bill is currently stuck in committee. Call your Representatives and tell them you are outraged at this idea and gently remind them that their job may be in jeopardy next election if they support this provision.
